When we take our first trips out driving a vehicle, there are many things that are never explained to us. For instance, no one bothers to tell us how to cool down a car that’s been in the sun for hours, or what rain conditions to apply the windshield wiper frequencies. You learn by trial and error, process of elimination, and so on.
Foggy windows are the same way. We may not know the triggering factors that creates foggy windows, but we learn many ways of addressing the issue: Opening a window temporarily, wiping the inside of our windows with a dry cloth, etc.
Fogged windows are related to the temperature outside the car, inside the car, and the air's moisture content. On a cold day, moisture from passengers exhaling, or snow on your boots, turns to condensation when it encounters the air next to the windows that's below a certain temperature (that’s called the dew point). The result is a fog-like steam that mists across the windows, obscuring your view.
There’s plenty of ways to address a foggy window, but we find the easiest thing to do is to establish that your HVAC is set to draw Fresh Air into the cabin. With the exchange set right, the windows won’t have time to mist over, if set correctly, and with a little adjustment, the fog will quickly go away. If you’re seeking a more permanent solution, there is a fog repellant you can use to coat your windshield, but that’s a much more extreme solution then adjusting the balance of drawn air in the cabin.
