Emergency Protocols

Emergency Protocols

Photo by by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay   Welcome to our May blog! This month, we wanted to talk about Emergency Protocols on your drive. With summer coming and more people out on the road, we hope you are doing your best to make driving safe for you and others.    We all know that flashing lights means that emergency vehicles are in the area. Those vehicles try to keep us safe and help people in trouble or stop people who are a danger to us on the road. It’s crucial that we know this and that we teach our kids this as they begin to approach the age where they are driving, too.   But it helps to remember that there are steps we can take both, as someone in an emergency situat ... read more

Keeping It Green: Why a Green Shop is Important to You

Keeping It Green: Why a Green Shop is Important to You

Welcome to the April blog! This month, we’re looking into why a Green Shop is vital to you as a consumer in Cincinnati and what it means to you and your children. Some of our older customers might not know what a Green Shop is, as it is a relatively new idea in an auto shop. We’re happy to explain what it means and how it affects your community as a whole! When working on cars that use fossil fuels, there’s no way to proceed without doing some damage to the environment. A Green Shop’s auto mechanics make essential strides to minimize its carbon footprint and protect the local environment.  Some of these actions include: Replaced aluminum or steel parts are appropriately recycled. Installing energy-efficient lighting Fluid recycling Our wintertime heaters recycle engine oil These kinds of measures help ensure that you can come to Avid Autowerx to get your car looked at, leave with a clear conscience, and know that care for the Cincinnati community wa ... read more

Why a Ding Matters to Your Car

Why a Ding Matters to Your Car

When it comes to most things, the wise among us say, “you can’t judge a book by its cover.” It’s what’s on the inside that counts, not the superficial. What does it matter if your car has a dent, but the engine remains mercifully unharmed by an accident? But sometimes, it matters that things aren’t right. A scratch, a ding, or a dent all add up to a feeling that our faithful car is a little bit shabby. And that in turn has a surprising negative affect on how we treat our cars.  Ignoring body damage to your car can lead to apathy. If you don’t believe your car is worth the bodywork to buff out a scratch or clear up ding, those are feelings that will affect the way you drive the car.  This kind of apathy can lead to less-safe driving because the car is no longer 'protected' by you. You may take chances you would never take with your vehicle when it was new.  This very same apathy results in deferring the scheduled maint ... read more

Romance and Car Life in Cincinnati

Romance and Car Life in Cincinnati

Do you remember your first love?  By first love, I don’t mean the boy or girl that first caught your eye. I mean the first automobile you fell in love with back in your youth. Not the one you saw in a showroom or on a poster, but the one you first could call your own, the one that gave you the freedom to get around.  We call this nostalgia ‘car life’ when you have a sense of yourself built into the car you own, and it makes its way into your relationship. You may have gained a partner along the way who understands how sentimental that first car is or was and perhaps shares a bit of nostalgia with you for the vehicle where you spend many date nights together. Although some may find it silly, car life in Cincinnati is alive and well. Last year, Fox 19 produced a beautiful account of a group of Pontiac Trans Am lovers at the Cavalcade of Customs Car Show who share their love of the Trans Am getting to meet and compare stories. It’s a heartwarming tale ... read more

New Year, New Issues: planning ahead for 2021

New Year, New Issues: planning ahead for 2021

So long, 2020! It’s normal to look back nostalgically at the year we’ve had, but with the civil unrest, western wildfires, threat of killer hornets, and of course, the pandemic, 2020 was not the kind of year that you stay tender to. So goodbye, 2020, and good riddance! 2021 will have plenty of challenges for us. There’s hope on the horizon now that a vaccine to COVID-19 has been approved, but with the economy in rough shape and so many out of work and/or homeless in the ensuing closedowns, the future is an undiscovered country that might be just as bad as the previous year. But the important thing now is to plan for 2021, and make the safe bets. Pay attention to what’s on the horizon… what to do about your kids if they are about to graduate into this situation… how to prepare for whatever bad shocks might come without living in fear. Your vehicle is one element that should not be giving you anxiety. You are likely driving it less than previous y ... read more

New Year’s Resolutions Around Your Driving Habits

New Year’s Resolutions Around Your Driving Habits

Are you planning on making a New Years Resolution this year? At Avid Autowerx, we’re challenging ourselves, our families, and our customers to add these driving resolutions that center around driving habits to their list: Be the grown up. Somebody’s gotta. When people are rude, give back kindness and consideration. Be courteous,  Be in the right state of mind to drive. Never drive after imbibing alcohol or drugs, including prescription drugs if they don’t recommend you drive. Put away your cell phone. Don’t text, don’t talk, unless you can do it hands free. And even then, try to get in the habit of pulling over to discuss anything more contentious then the price of potatoes. Buckle up. Strap in, and make sure all your passengers are strapped in, and in the right kind of chair (don’t put an infant in a seat belt). Signal. If you are lax on this up until this ... read more

Showing Gratitude For Our Cars

Showing Gratitude For Our Cars

It’s November, and that means the holiday season will kick off soon with the feast of feasts, Thanksgiving. This is the time of year when we all come back from our individual busy lives and spend a holiday weekend with our extended families over parades and football and board games. We gather around a table, a diverse collection of pilgrims, come to give thanks for our safe arrival home one more year. In some families, though, there are members, young and old, who are vulnerable to disease and can’t risk a full family gathering. That will mean many families will have to skip Thanksgiving this year to protect each other. It’s important to show gratitude when we can for being well enough to see each other for the holiday.  As we give thanks for all we have this year and for each other, there’s someone you rely on daily who deserves your recognition: your car! Who else braves the weather for you, beats the traffic in on time, and keeps you mild, calm, and en ... read more

Not Taking Care of Your Car is the Scariest Thing Around

Not Taking Care of Your Car is the Scariest Thing Around

It’s October, now, and Avid Autowerx wants to know: are you taking proper care of your automobile? Are you regularly getting tune-ups with auto mechanics, and inspections to keep you knowledgeable about what your car needs to extend its life? Are you getting ticks, noises and worries checked out? Are you getting auto repair for the issues found in your inspections? October is a season of harvest, and then decay. The leaves are beginning to turn, and soon, they will fall in great numbers, leaving the trees bare and frightening. The days are getting shorter; soon it will be darker earlier. Spiders are in the peak months of their invasion, creeping into your home.  But you, and your car? This is just another season to weather. Sure, you watch horror movies in the run-up to Halloween and enjoy Pumpkin Spice Everything. Otherwise, your routine just goes on. You get up for work, run your errands, feed the pets, and get the kids where they need to be. Life goes on, as it does in ... read more

Oh No! Not the Dreaded Check Engine Light!

Oh No! Not the Dreaded Check Engine Light!

Imagine this scenario… You’re driving in your car and the Check Engine Light comes on. What do you do? Panic?  No… Pull over?  Not unless you hear some odd noise or your car starts losing power. Blow it off?  Well, as tempting as it is...no, you shouldn’t blow it off either. When many drivers see the Check Engine Light, they will often consider the options listed above. We understand, you’re living a busy life and you don’t have time to deal with the dreaded Check Engine light. But, here’s what you should do. Contact your favorite auto mechanic, or the Avid Autowerx team, and set an appointment for an inspection. It’s kind of like scheduling an appointment with your doctor when you have a fever. Something in your body doesn’t feel right. You might put off calling the doctor’s office for a while. But over time, the fever doesn’t go away and you start to show other symptoms. If you keep blowing it off ... read more

Know Your Fluids

Just like you, your car needs the right levels of fluids to run properly. Unlike you, your machine can’t compensate for those fluids. It will try to give you warnings, but as it runs dry, costly damage begins. Avid Autowerx wants to remind you to keep these fluids in mind as things get busy in life, because they can be important and lead to expensive headaches down the road. And most can be monitored just with a quick look under the hood of the car once a month, giving you peace of mind and a sense of being sympatico with your primary means of transportation! Coolant/Antifreeze - This is the most important fluid to monitor. Service centers recommend keeping an eye on it every two weeks, especially in bouts of extreme weather. An engine head cracked because there was no antifreeze or coolant left is a dead engine. This is fairly easy to check in most models, because the radiator’s reserve tank is usually in an easy-to-see place. It should be flushed every ... read more
