Why You Should Not Run Your Gas to Empty

Nothing is more anxiety-inducing than seeing that your low gas warning light come on your dashboard, especially if you don't see a gas station in sight. If you don't want to be caught in this situation, get in a good habit of filling up before the warning light comes on. Being stranded and out of gas isn't the only consequence of running on an empty gas tank. Multiple problems can arise within your car's internal system.

Reasons Why Should You Not Run Your Gas to Empty

  1. Risk of Getting Stranded. As mentioned earlier, it can be very stressful to run your gas tank on low with no gas stations around. The worst situation you can be in is to be stuck on the side of the road with no gas left in your car. You might be able to get help from a friend or family. However, if no one can help you at the moment, you'd have to pay for someone to help!
  2. Damage to Catalytic Converter. Your catalytic converter is an integral part of your vehicle's exhaust system. Right before you stall out, your catalytic converter will take damage.
  3. Overheating Fuel Pump. Your car's fuel pump is designed to send gasoline to the engine. The pump is usually submerged in the gas tank, where it uses fuel to cool and lubricate it. When you run your car on empty, it's possible for the pump to overheat, leading to premature wear.
  4. Accumulated buildup in Fuel Pump. Another problem that can arise with the fuel pump is debris buildup. There is usually a layer of particles that settle at the bottom of your gas tank, and it usually stays there until your car is trying to grab every last bit of fuel it can. When the fuel pump sucks up the last bit of your gas, any debris in your tank will attempt to go through with it. As a result, this could hurt and jam your fuel pump.

Avoid these dangers to your vehicle by being more aware of what's left in your gas tank. It would be best to get in a good habit of filling up when you are left with 1/4 of a tank.
